Unaware, you have been contributing to the betterment of the environment, just haven’t acknowledged that yet. But the need of the hour is also sustainability in business practices.

Mismanagement of waste products, carbon emission, air pollution, dangerous chemical exposure, dust hazards by business houses is only the beginning of the end. Directly or indirectly, they diversely impact human civilizations.

Each year 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced and 40% of that is single-use. There is no denying how bad plastic is for the environment, for animals, for humans and for the fragile ecosystem. Ironically, plastic production has only shown tremendous growth from 1.5 million tonnes in 1950 to 359 million tonnes in 2018. If these statistics don’t bother you about what’s coming, you are in store for more.

Air pollution contributes to 2 million deaths of Indians every year, also leaving thousands with life-threatening respiratory diseases and discomfort. After biomass mass burning, businesses cause the maximum air pollution. However, heads of giant groups like Tata Motors, Mahindra Lifespaces, Kirloskar Brothers limited, Dalmia Bharat among others joined the commitment to make India’s air quality amiable. As consumers, we must encourage such initiatives by big and small enterprises alike. Substantiality is also embracing these changes. They stick to their promises and we as consumers stick to our loyalty towards them. Win-Win!

There has been a toxic trail of pesticides and poisoning in recent history. Nestle for instance accepts the fact that its products have not met health standards and norms. Previously, 10 out of 13 honey brands failed the purity test, founded by CSE investigations. And these are just the recent events.

As consumers, we are blessed with choices. We can choose to be eco-friendly, energy-efficient, aware and happy. If these words do not mean anything to you, read more till a drop of conscience befalls you. Your ignorance is really costing a lot to the entire ecosystem and only time will tell how gruesome the consequences will get. But, considering you are a rational, responsible consumer or hopefully want to be one, reflecting on your actions and preferences is the first step to be the environment’s friend. A survey by Capgemini states that 79% of their survey population are shifting to sustainable practices and I hope you’ll too.
