Jawed Karim - Early Life and Education
Jawed Karim was born on October 28, 1979, in Merseburg, East Germany, to Christine and NaimulKarim (now Germany). His father is a Bangladeshi researcher who works for 3M, an American multinational conglomerate headquartered in Maplewood, Minnesota, and founded in June 1902. Karim's mother is a German scientist who works at the University of Minnesota as a Research Professor of Biochemistry. His younger brother, IliasKarim, is his only sibling.
Jawed Karim grew up in Neuss, West Germany, after being born in Merseburg. Due to rising xenophobia, he and his family were forced to cross the inner German border in the early 1980s.
However, he had to deal with a number of other incidents of xenophobia in Neuss, which forced him and his family to relocate to Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1992. Karim received his high school diploma from Saint Paul Central High School in 1997.
