The Balanced Work-Life-Fitness, Strike the Equilibrium

I'm Priyanka, 32 years old, an IT professional who has been married for 9 years and has two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 2.5-year-old girl.

I'd always been on the heavier side and was labelled a healthy kid in school, but I never gave it much thought. I gained 80+ Kgs after the birth of my second child, and many health issues arose, prompting me to reconsider, and in a short period of time, I lost 22 Kgs and reached a healthy weight of 58 Kgs. India is gaining weight (though not in a way I can brag about)! Indians have a long history of malnutrition, but they are now increasingly reporting overweight, obesity, and its consequences. Obesity in Indians is defined by excess body fat, abdominal adiposity, increased subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat, and fat deposition in ectopic sites (such as liver, muscle, and others).

Obesity plays a significant role in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, both of which are extremely common (T2DM). Despite the fact that this is a global issue, India is unique in that it is grappling with both over and under nutrition at the same time. The scope of India's obesity problem is examined in this article.

National Family Health Survey

According to the National Family Health Survey, the percentage of ever-married women aged 15-49 years who are overweight or obese increased from 11% in NFHS-2 to 15% in NFHS-3 (NFHS). Malnutrition is more common in rural areas, whereas overweight and obesity are three times more common in urban areas. It's possible that this is due to the fact that cities have less physical activity. Under nutrition and overweight/obesity are also more common in women than in men.

This dual disease pattern in women could be due to endocrine factors, but it's more likely due to societal and cultural norms that prevent women from leading healthy lives.Women with 12 or more years of education are three times more likely than those with no education to be overweight or obese.

So, now that you know the facts, tell us about the problem and the solution.

How Obesity Occurs?

Obesity is commonly caused by overeating and insufficient exercise. Your body will store a lot of energy, especially fat and sugar, if you don't burn it off through exercise and physical activity.

Obesity: What Causes It?

A variety of factors can contribute to weight gain and maintenance. Among them are diet, lack of exercise, environmental factors, and genetics.

Food and Activity

People gain weight when they consume more calories than they expend through physical activity. This imbalance is the leading cause of weight gain.

Environment

·         Our ability to maintain a healthy weight is influenced by our surroundings. Consider the scenario below:

·         When there are no nearby parks, sidewalks, or affordable gyms, people find it difficult to be physically active.

·         Overly large food portions increase calorie consumption, requiring even more physical activity to maintain a healthy weight.

·         People are more likely to buy unhealthy foods like high-fat snacks and sugary drinks if they are advertised.
