Sports are no longer limited to fields; the larger a sport's fan base, the more valuable it is in the financial game. Every year, billions of dollars are spent on sports. The NBA alone earns around $10 billion per year in television viewership. As a result, it's clear that all of the broadcasting companies are fighting for the media rights of these major leagues. Because of the enormous profit potential in advertising, companies are willing to spend billions just for broadcasting rights. When it comes to the NFL, it signed a $100 billion+ deal with various companies for its broadcasting rights. Okay, I'm not going to confuse you by talking about all of the major leagues' broadcasting rights in one place.
Indian Premium League (IPL) Media Rights
The IPL is the most popular cricket league in the world, as well as the most profitable for the Indian cricket board (BCCI). When it comes to bidding for the media rights to the IPL, media houses go crazy. Some major players, such as Amazon, Netflix, and Facebook, have expressed interest in bidding for the media rights of the IPL in the years 2023-2027. According to the Times of India, Apple is expected to pick the tender documents next week and will be challenged by tech giants such as Facebook and Netflix. Tenders have already been purchased by Disney, Zee-Sony, Amazon, and TV18-Viacom, among others.
In the last 14 years, the prices of IPL media rights have skyrocketed. Starsport, the current owner of the IPL media tender, paid Rs.16,347 crores for the rights in 2017, but the base price of the media rights for the years 2023-2027 will be between Rs.45,000 crore and Rs.50,000 crore.
The media rights for the IPL have been divided into four buckets this time. Let's take a closer look at each of these buckets:
IPL TV Broadcasting Rights- First Bucket
The starting price for television broadcasting rights is Rs. 18,130 crore. A fixed price of Rs. 90 crore has been set for each game. If the number of matches increases, the price may rise.
IPL Digital Rights- Second Bucket
The digital rights' base price has been set at Rs. 12,200 crore. These rights are expected to sell out quickly, as the audience's consumption habits have shifted dramatically in recent years.
18 Games including the opener and four play-offs- Third bucket
This bucket will contain 18 games, including both the opener and the play-off matches. The starting price for this bucket is Rs. 1,440.00.
Overseas TV and Digital rights- Fourth Bucket
The price for this bucket has been set at Rs.1,100crore.
National Football League(NFL) Media Rights
The NFL's media rights have already been distributed for the 2021 season. Amazon, CBS, ESPN/ABC, Fox, and NBC are among the companies that have signed long-term deals with the league. By 2023, these agreements will be in effect. Let's take a closer look at each of the pacts.
Amazon
After becoming a part of the "Tri-Cast" distribution model with a few other networks in 2017, Amazon Prime now has the exclusive rights to "Thursday Night Football" after it became a part of the "Tri-Cast" distribution model with a few other networks in 2017. According to a CNBC report, Amazon is paying $1 billion per season for midweek exclusivity.
