Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. is Snoop Dogg's true name. On October 20th, 1971, he was born. He was born in Long Beach, California, to Vernell Varnado and Beverly Tate. Vernell was named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. (1948–1985), because his father, a Vietnam War veteran, singer, and mail carrier, died three months after he was born. His father had been largely absent throughout his life. Because of his love for the Peanuts cartoon character, he was given the moniker "Snoopy" by his parents when he was a child. He was the second of his mother's three boys. His mother and stepfather split in 1975. Broadus began singing and playing the piano when he was very young in the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church. In sixth grade, he began rapping. To help support his family and make ends meet, Broadus worked as a child selling candy, delivering newspapers, and bagging groceries. He was regarded as a hardworking student and active churchgoer who took part in singing groups and football. Despite his mother's efforts to keep him out of trouble, Broadus acknowledged in 1993 that during his teens he began involved in illicit operations and joining gangs.
Broadus used to rap in class all the time. As he recalled: "I drew such a large crowd when I rapped in the school hallways that the principal mistook it for a fight. It made me realise that I possessed a skill. My raps seemed to spark people's curiosity, which piqued my own interest in myself." As a youth, Broadus was regularly in trouble with the law. He was a member of the Rollin' 20s Crips gang in Long Beach's Eastside neighbourhood, yet he claimed in 1993 that he had never joined a gang, despite widespread police and media allegations to the contrary. He was arrested for cocaine possession shortly after graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1989, and spent the following three years in prison, including at Wayside Jail. Snoop teamed up with two cousins, Nate Dogg and Lil' 1/2 Dead, as well as friend Warren G, to record handmade tapes. They called their band 213 after the postcode of their hometown of Long Beach at the time.
The Musical Career of Snoop Dogg
Broadus began recording under the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg. Dr. Dre and the other Dogg members of his old band, Tha Dogg Pound, initially cooperated on the theme song for the 1992 film Deep Cover, and later on Dr. Dre's debut solo album The Chronic. Snoop Dogg's newest album, Doggystyle, was a critical and financial success in part due to this increased exposure.
The singles "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" and "Gin and Juice" reached the top 10 most-played songs in the US, fuelling the growth of West Coast G-funk hip hop, and the album stayed on the Billboard charts for several months. Snoop Dogg was regularly mentioned as an example of aggressive and misogynous singers, and gangsta rap became a focal point of censorship and labelling issues. Snoop Dogg, unlike many other incredibly harsh gangsta rappers, appeared to have a softer side, according to music writer Chuck Philips. According to Rolling Stone music journalist Touré, Snoop has a more delicate vocal delivery compared to other rappers: "Snoop's vocal style is component of what defines him: when many rappers roar, literally and metaphorically, he speaks softly."
