International Olympic Day 2022 History

Dr Gruss was a member the Czech International Olympic Committee that suggested the idea to commemorate World Olympic Day. He presented a report that proposed World Olympic Day at the 41st Session in Stockholm, 1947. The proposal was then adopted one year later at the 42nd IOC session in St Moritz. The committee was asked to choose a date between June 17th and June 24. The committee finally decided to recognize the International Olympic Committee’s founding date as International Olympic Day.


Sigfrid, then president of the IOC, observed the first International Olympic Day on June 23, 1948.

The first Olympic day was observed by the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Canada, Switzerland, Venezuela and Greece on June 23, 1948. Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC at that time, encouraged young people to make sport a central part of their lives.

World Olympic Day Celebration for Every Country

NOCs offer a range of cultural, educational, and sports events to commemorate Olympic Day.

Each country has its own celebration. The IOC welcomes NOCs to create their own Olympic Day events. All continents have NOCs that are always looking for ways to bring Olympians and athletes together with families, schools, and the general public.

Some countries have integrated the event into their education curriculum. Many NOCs have added shows and expos in recent years. Nine countries participated in the inaugural Olympic Day in 1948. They ranged from Austria to Venezuela. In recent years, 170 NOCs around the globe have hosted Olympic Day ceremonies since those humble beginnings. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic over 3 million people from 116 countries celebrated Olympic Day 2021.
