Four Positive Climate Change Developments

It is now clear that the Climate Crisis is real. Both humans and nature are suffering from the melting glaciers, as well as more extreme weather events. There are some positive developments in climate change . We see more businesses, governments, individuals, and organizations responding daily to the crisis. People are coming together to take concrete steps to mitigate the worst effects of climate changes.

1. The planet will stop heating in 3 to 5 Years

Most people know that the planet will heat up for 50 years more even if we stop burning fossil fuels. These calculations were based on simple computer models. Penn State climate scientist Michael E. Mann stated that the oceans would absorb more carbon if people stopped emitting it now. It is not 25-30, but more than three to five decades.

Other scientists don't support Mann's conclusion. According to them , temperatures will reach their peak 10 years after the demise of fossil fuels. Researchers also noted that while temperatures won't immediately begin cooling, they would rise 10 years later.

This is not a new concept. Mann spoke in 2020, and computer models have been improved over the past decade. This is an important fact that is often overlooked by the media.

Even though we are far from ending the oil-oil relationship it is encouraging to see that stable and weather is possible.

2. Natural Carbon Sinks May Absorb 1/3 of Our CO2 Emissions

A 2019 study showed that restoring natural terrestrial carbon resources like mangroves or peat bogs could help us store and sequester 23.8 million tonnes of CO2 per year. The study found that restoring these areas is not economically feasible, so an alternative figure of 11-15 million tonnes per year of CO2 seems more probable. This means that natural carbon sinks could sequester 30% of our CO2.

The Royal Society published a 2018 report that estimated that reforestation could remove anywhere from three to 18 billion tons CO2 per year.

It's this that makes it so exciting. This means that we can eliminate substantial amounts of CO2 with minimal investment in new technology, expensive equipment or high costs. This is enough to repair the carbon sinks and stop destroying forests and soils.

This will help reduce the climate crisis and increase the biodiversity. Biodiverse systems will be more resilient to change and more productive economically. The system is balanced and is therefore more stable. It can also protect us from pandemics.

3. Rewilding Is More Effective Than Planting

The next piece of good news is now available. There has been much discussion about planting trees in recent years. A study in October 2019 showed that the world still had room for another 0.9million hectares of forest. This would enable us to plant more trees than 1 trillion.

The study found that trees are "one of the most efficient carbon drawdown strategies to date". It is estimated that one trillion trees could capture more than 200 gigatons CO2. This is 25% more than the atmosphere currently.

This study was widely reported and people started to embrace tree-plantingas an option to combat climate change. Tree planting programs cost billions of dollars. Marc Benioff, SalesForce.com CEO, and Jane Goodall created the Trillion Tree Challenge. The Nature Conservancy's Plant a Billion Trees program. The Bonn Challenge was also created before the study was published but has attracted more attention.

Tree planting can pose problems. Monocultures can result, which is a loss of biodiversity. They are very susceptible to diseases.

Trees should be planted at the right place and time to ensure that they survive. Past projects have shown that 90% of trees don't survive if not replanted within five years.

The good news is: Studies show that protecting and rewilding is more efficient than planting. Nature published a study that found natural forests are more effective at storing atmospheric carbon. However, conflicting priorities can impede carbon storage potential.

Supporting and encouraging rewilding is possible by adding compost to soil or setting up an Insect Hotels, which allow pollinators to reproduce. An insect hostel can be very useful in your garden and on your farm. An insect hostel can not only attract and support beneficial insects such as ladybugs and pollinating bees but also keep out pests that could harm your plants. Many projects have also reintroduced native animals such as wolves to Yellowstone Park and bison for UK.

Sometimes, we need to intervene when the environment has been severely damaged. Shrimp farming and agriculture might cause the destruction of mangroves. Water may not be able to flow through them. If hydrology is restored to its original state, Mother Nature will be in control. Nature can be repaired and is intelligent.

Rewilding is cheaper than planting, and it takes less time. This makes it more adaptable.

4. Fixing Nature Will Create Employment

One of the most common reasons for not switching to fossil fuels was that it would hurt the economy and cost jobs. The World Economic Forum has proven that this is false. A report from 2021 stated that businesses could generate $10.1 trillion in annual business revenue and 395 million new jobs if nature was repaired.

It would require transforming three industries which account for around 80% of the loss to nature: energy, infrastructure and food.

Vietnam invested $9 million to restore its mangroves in 166 villages. This prevented soil erosion from flooding and saved more than $15 million from potential damage caused by extreme weather. Mangroves are among the most biodiverse areas on the planet. They provide habitats for birds, fish, and shellfish and protect the oceans. The community's per-hectare aquaculture yield rose by between 210 percent and 789 percent.

According to a 2018 study, the global value of nature and its products and services was $125 billion. The global economy's foundation is made up of the raw materials it supplies. It would be better if we all worked together with it than against it.

These examples demonstrate that there is a lot of commitment in key areas to the fight against global heating. This also shows that the sad truth of global warming being caused by humans can be turned around to make it an environmental rallying cry. If humans are the primary cause of global warming, we can become the architects of its demise.
