Every year on September 15, India commemorates National Engineers Day to mark the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Shri Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the country's greatest engineers. This day is commemorated to honor all engineers who have made important contributions to the growth and development of the country.
In 1968, the government designated Shri's birth anniversary to be a public holiday. National Engineers Day was named after Mr. M. Visvesvaraya. Among Shri Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya's most prominent works are the construction of Mysore's famous Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam, the installation of the Deccan Plateau irrigation system, the flood protection system for Hyderabad, and the planning of the road between Tirupati and Tirumala.
In India, around 15 lakh engineers are produced each year. The Indian engineering workforce is highly recognized throughout the world, and many of its members hold critical positions in some of the world's top organizations. Ratan Tata, former Chairman of the Tata Group, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe are among them.

Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Life History
Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1860, in Mysore, a royal realm that is today known as Karnataka. Srinivasa Shastri, an Ayurvedic physician and Sanskrit scholar, was his father. His mother, Venkachamma, was a devout Hindu. Visvesvaraya's father died when he was 15 years old. He moved to Bangalore to further his study after finishing his primary and secondary education in Chikballapur. Visvesvaraya earned a BA from Madras University's Central College in Bangalore in 1881. Following that, he acquired financial aid from the Government of Mysore and enrolled in the Science College, Poona, to study engineering. In 1883, he received first place in the LCE and FCE tests. (This exam is comparable to today's BE)
Career Of Mokshamundam Visvesvaraya
Visvesvaraya obtained a job offer from the Bombay Government after graduating from engineering and was hired as an assistant engineer in Nashik. As an engineer, he accomplished a tremendous deal. He built a new irrigation system dubbed the "Block System" and delivered water from the Indus River to the settlement of Sukkur. Steel doors were put within the construction to make it easier to restrict the flow of water from the dam. Visvesvaraya created innumerable other works of this type, the list is limitless.
At 1903, a dam was built in Pune's Khadakwasla reservoir. Because to the design of its doors, it could withstand flood pressure without causing damage to the dam. Following the success of this dam, the Tigra Dam in Gwalior and the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) in Mysore, Karnataka were built. Visvesvaraya oversaw the building of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam on the Kaveri River, which was later dedicated. When this dam was erected, it was Asia's largest reservoir.
When he was approved by the Govt. of Mysore, he worked at Mysore Soap Factory, Parasite Laboratory, Mysore Iron and Steel Factory, Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic Institute, Bangalore Agricultural University, State Bank of Mysore, Century Club, Mysore Chambers of Commerce, and Vishwasvaraya College. And so engineering was born. In addition, more factories and educational institutions were constructed. Visvesvaraya was instrumental in popularizing the idea of establishing a road connecting Tirumala and Tirupati.
Diwan of Mysore
Visvesvaraya traveled abroad and pondered the country's economic development during a brief sabbatical from his profession in 1908. Following his return from overseas, he briefly served as Nizam of Hyderabad. Visvesvaraya Ji advised safeguards since the Musi river in Hyderabad was at risk of flooding at the time. Visvesvaraya was named Chief Engineer of Mysore State in November 1909. Visvesvaraya was then appointed Diwan of the princely state of Mysore in 1912, a position he held for seven years. He resigned from this position in 1918.
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya's Awards
Visvesvaraya was awarded India's highest accolade, the Bharat Ratna, after the country gained independence in 1955.
The London Institution of Civil Engineers also recognized Mr. Visvesvaraya.
The Indian Institute of Science also recognized Visvesvaraya ji.
Visvesvaraya ji is one of Karnataka's most well-known citizens. Aside from that, he has received doctorates from eight other institutes across the country.
On the 100th anniversary of Visvesvaraya Ji's birth, the Government of India issued a stamp in his honor.
