We all learn from our mistakes and from ourselves, our acts, our parents, gurus, and masters. Whatever you are going through, learning lessons is a part of life. Many of us are too afraid or hesitant to appreciate and chat with our professors one-on-one, but now is the day to come out and thank those who have helped us become the finest versions of ourselves. What could be better than learning about the people who have given the entire country valuable lessons? The ones that are rarely discussed. On this Teachers' Day, let us look at three people whose ideals continue to affect education and teachers today.
Maria Montessori
Her teaching method, known as the Montessori Method, is still in use today. Maria Montessori, born on August 31, 1870 in Italy, was one of the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome's medical school in 1896. In 1900, she was named co-director of a special education teacher training program. Maria began trying to see which tactics were most effective.
In 1907, she opened a daycare center in a poor neighborhood of Rome, where she worked with children ages three to seven. Maria saw how the children learned by exploring puzzles and other objects in their surroundings. With this in mind, she set out to create software and tools that would allow youngsters to choose their own resources while also motivating them to study.
Savitribai Phule
The first female teacher and headmistress in India were born on January 3, 1831, near Pune. She married Jyotirao Phule, a 13-year-old, when she was ten years old. Savitribai acquired teacher training after learning from her husband and his colleagues. With Jyotirao, she established India's first girls' school.
The pair also tried to create a gender equality movement and to oppose the caste system. They also advocated for widow remarriage and campaigned against child marriage. When it comes to education, Savitribai emphasized the need of giving students the ability to think for themselves. "In life, education should provide the option to choose between good and evil, truth and deception," she reasoned. In recognition of her achievements to education, Pune University was renamed Savitribai Phule Pune University.
John Dewey
John Dewey was born in Vermont, United States, on October 20, 1859, and his ideas about learning and practice are still relevant today. He believed that children should learn by doing, using a "hands-on approach" to learning.
He thought that students would learn best if they engaged with and adapted to their circumstances. He also emphasized that instructors and students are both learners and that they should collaborate to learn. He underlines the importance of giving all learners a voice in his book Democracy in Education.
