The retail industry can be broadly divided into:

1. Unorganized

2. Organized retailing

1.  Unorganized Retail:

Indian mom-and-pop stores and little kirana businesses managed by families have traditionally dominated the nation's retail industry. These stores stand out for their small size, condensed variety and selection, inefficient upstream processes, meagre funding, out-of-date infrastructure, and dearth of skilled staff. This conventional method of selling is referred to as unorganised retailing.

In India, unorganised retailing refers to companies whose operations are not permitted by a law or other legal provision and/or do not keep consistent financial records. Small, dispersed enterprises that operate from either a permanent or mobile location to deliver goods or services are thus a defining feature of this industry.

2. Organized Retail:

A store that practises organised retail is one where every item is first sorted and classified according to its nature, form, and function before being displayed all under one roof. They are organised into many departments and shown in a methodical manner along with their pricing ranges.

A multi-owner chain of stores or distribution hubs undser management typically houses organised retail, which deals in a range of formats. In today's organised retail environment, comfort, service support, convenience, style, and speed are prioritised. It is anything that offers customers a more pleasurable shopping experience, brand connection, variety and choice for selection, rewards for loyalty, entertainment, and other benefits.
