World Toilet Day occurs on November 19th each year. Since 2013, there has been an annual United Nations festival honouring toilets and bringing attention to the 3.6 million individuals who lack access to controlled, safe sanitation. Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6: Water and Sanitation for All involves taking action to address the global sanitation crisis. The SDG is SDG 6.2, which calls for the provision of secure restrooms for all people by the year 2030.

Sanitation
On October 2, 2014, the nation of India began the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban (Urban), also known as the Clean India Mission, to promote health, hygiene, and sanitation (October 2). To honour World Toilet Day, which falls on November 19, 2022, GRAMEEN, the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, and the Ministry of Jal Shakti are organising a "Swachhta Run" across rural India. The "Swachhta run" was to be organised at the Gram Panchayat level by States and UTs (GP). Local heroes, Swachhagrahis, ASHA employees, young people, volunteers, folk artists, etc. will fall under this category. It was recommended that in order to motivate the local population to participate, the "Run" should be flagged off by the elected officials, athletes, celebrities, and local influencers. The states and UTs were also informed about participation in the "Run," which included the distribution of refreshments, a medical kit, T-shirts, and participation certificates by the GP, as well as the taking of the "Swachhta Pag" by all participants. Banners, posters, and slogans were also displayed along the route of SBM(G), Phase II.

According to a UN evaluation, India has succeeded in providing access to better drinking water for more people in both urban and rural regions, and has achieved "modest" progress in reducing the rate of open defecation in its population.
Among the 16 countries on the list that have reduced open defecation by more than 20 percentage points since 2000, only Cambodia and Ethiopia did better than India.

Sanitation
Globally, 74% of the population lacks access to clean drinking water. Urban families are 10 percentage points more likely than rural households to have access to better water sources. In places without clean water pipes, boiling or other techniques of purification are good options. It is generally known that treating water in these contexts has positive effects on children's health.
The interactions between better sanitation and water treatment are not fully understood. The proportion of households with toilets increased from 45% to 62% as a result of the subsidy trial. The percentage of households that boil their water before drinking it decreased from 60% to 45% over this time. This is a sharp and notable decline. The fact that disadvantaged households were less likely to have access to bottled water had a significant role in this.
